Audiophile Stereo Listening, Speaker Positioning.
Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 10:37PM Three months ago I took the leap into the world of stereophilia. Ever since, I've been trying to find the best positioning for my speakers. I have a very small listening space and have a even smaller space to keep my speakers away from the wall. Here is what I've found to work.
Toe-In is necessary but too much Toe-In ( as some manuals that come with the speakers show diagrams of the speakers pointing exactly at the main listening position ). I've settled on the equilateral and 2/3 methods.
Following the equilateral method, you place your speakers apart with equal or < equal the distance you sit away from each speaker. So, If you sit 10' away from Left and 10' from Right then they should be 10' apart. Toe-In is defined by the 2/3 method where the sitting position is 2/3 of the distance where the the speakers converge. Take a measurement of the distance from the center of the imaginary line between the speakers to your sitting position. Lets say for example this comes out to be 9' feet. Therefore 9/x = 3/2 -- so the convergence should be 13 1/2' or 4 1/2' behind your main listening area. Put a lamp or somethin back there and point your speakers toward it. The 2/3 method prevents direct contact with the sound energy from your speakers, thus making is more difficult to locate exactly where the speakes are in the room ( if your not staring right at them :P )
